31 January 2015

Possibly only of interest to my fellow crafty types, but today I had lunch with Mum and my brother. Mum showed me the most recent results of her sewist skills - the centre panel to a small quilt.

Everything has been hand-stitched.

Home made apple turnovers.

I'd like to say 'help yourself' but Jac and I ate them all!

I think I'm about halfway now with my crocheted blanket (excluding borders).

Bright and colourful is what I wanted. Bright and colourful is what I've got!

As today has been quiet, here's a 'Windowsill Wednesday' (I'm sure there used to be a group on Flickr called that).

These white tulips are currently on the kitchen windowsill.

I had a lovely wander with my friend Tracey in Ardington this afternoon. Not sure what I'll do when she goes back to work, and I have to wander on my own again!

These lychees are a gift from a neighbour who bought them for his family to try, but then discovered none of them like lychees.

We're not overly fond of them here either, but I thought I'd at least get a photo out of them.

25 January 2015

I wasn't sure whether to make my picture today one of this morning, or this afternoon, since I took one at both times. In the end I plumped for this afternoon, when Lou and I went to visit Sue from Camera Club who is in the horsepiddle at the moment, following a nasty fall just before Christmas. It was lovely to see her; it's clear that her spirits aren't too bad, that her sense of humour is fully intact, and that she's keen to get back to the Club as soon as she can. As you can see, on my bringing out a camera, they managed to find a way to avoid direct eye contact with the lens.

Here is one from this morning - I was being a supportive spectator again. Thankfully, it wasn't quite as cold as last time.

Just look at the expression on her face. She's not happy with cold paving slabs, and even colder winds. She'd like some 'warm' now, thank you very much.

And who can blame her?!

23 January 2015

Brrrrrrrrrrrr. As my next door neighbour and I were both outside scraping our cars this morning, he told me it was -6°C at that time.

The sun is shining but it's still very cold; this is some frost on top of a fence.

A quick(ish) visit to Bournemouth for us today for the daughter to have her portfolio interview there. It was the longest interview thus far, and she came out saying she felt it really wasn't the place for her.

We had our sandwiches overlooking the sea, and making conversation with a man of 78 who used to live in Newbury, but now lives down there. He had his dog (Bramble) with him, and we talked about everything from cameras to cars to travel.
Thanks Lou x

I took this shot yesterday (20th January). There is nothing special about it other than the fact that it is my first image to ever have been edited in Lightroom. I opened it in Photoshop only to add my watermark (I know that could be done in Lightroom, but I'm not going to run before I can walk).

Many thanks to Anna Marlow for giving me a 'Lightroom Lesson' at Wantage Camera Club last night, and for giving me the confidence to at least have a 'go' with a program which has always scared me!

Uh oh ... the tulips are opening up.

Open tulips + macro lens = happy me.

17 January 2015

We were up stupidly early (for a Saturday) to get the daughter to Winchester for another portfolio interview. A snowy start to the day, but once the sun came out, it was lovely.

At the end of her interview, the guy said to her "I can't offer you a place here and now, but you needn't lose any sleep worrying about it." We take that as a good sign?

It was great to have a cuppa and catch up with Kathy B too. Thank you. xx

Having a very quiet domestic day today. I've got lots of little jobs done, and now I'm going to spend some time hooking before the house gets noisy again.

The blanket is coming along, although I had to do the first row three times before I got it right!

14 January 2015

I must confess I took today's picture yesterday. I wanted to post it today because today is this lovely lady's birthday.

It's one of those 'big' birthdays which ends in a '0'. Some of us from Camera Club's 'Back Row Gang' went out to celebrate yesterday evening.

Happy Birthday Jac. I'm so happy to know you. xxx

Guess who has a gorgeous bunch of tulips? I make no apology for the tulip macros which will most likely appear in a few days!

Many thanks to Lou for the tulips, they are so pretty. x

12 January 2015

A largely dull day chez nous. I have cleaned (almost all) the house. I have also been for a swim.

Both these activities were partly powered by tea, and these mahoosive home made choc chip cookies, made by the daughter.

Currently sitting on the kitchen windowsill, where I can enjoy it every day as I potter.

We spent the day in Cheltenham today, for my daughter's portfolio interview at the University of Gloucester's Hardwick Campus.

The interview went well, and my girl loved the campus.

Last year's crafty 'resolution' was to learn to knit socks. I did (and knitted three pairs).

This year I want to make a colourful crocheted blanket. I'm ready for the off.

4 January 2015

I had a Costa cuppa and catch up with these two lovelies this afternoon.

I hadn't seen either of them for 8 years, so we were well overdue a get together. One lives in the US now, so we took advantage of her being over here to visit family. We were in the same class at school, more years' ago than seems possible!

Happy New Year

I have decided to do another 365 project this year. That means one picture a day for every day of the year; all of which will be turned into a printed book when the year has ended. I did this project in 2013, largely with images taken on my phone, and via the Instagram app. The resulting books are something we treasure.  This time I'd like the images to be of better quality, but we'll wait and see on that score!

This shot was taken last night outside the old Tithe Barn at Great Coxwell. I went with some friends to help another of us finish up her own 365 of 2014. I thought it would be fitting to start mine at the same time. This is a basic picture of last night's moon, with a light-painted '2015' superimposed to one side. Many thanks to Anna Marlow for the superb light painting!

Happy New Year to anyone who happens to stop by and see this post. I hope the year turns out to be a kind one to you and your loved ones. May you achieve at least some of what you wish for yourselves. xx
